Yes, if you don't switch to "Your Card" in the control panel,
the card can lie dormant in the slot and not disable the
firmware function.

Actually, you only have to set "Your Card" for IIe cards.
IIGS specific cards like sound cards, accelerator cards,
and frame grabber cards like the Visionary GS allow you
to NOT set "Your Card" and yet the IIGS still works with
the card in the slot.

Basically, if you have IIGS specific cards, you can use a
slot and a port at the same time.  Only the older IIe style
cards require you to disable a port for a slot.

Another interesting thing: some IIGS aware programs like
ProTERM 3.1 let you use a port even if the corresponding
slot is set to "Your Card!"  For example, if you had a PC
Transporter in slot 2 and permanently set "Your Card" for
slot 2 in the control panel, you will lose the modem port right?
Wrong if you have ProTERM 3.1.  ProTERM 3.1 will keep
seeing the modem port even if the control panel is set to
"Your Card."  That means you can use the PCT and the
modem (with ProTERM) without accessing the control
panel to change a setting.

By the way, did you know the PC Transporter can see
the ADB mouse?  ;-)
