This might be the problem only if the ROM is the original version.
When the ROM 01 was released it was no longer posible to select the 
same color for both background and text from the control panel. I do not
know if it would be posible to set them the same color by writing directly
to battery RAM.

Check to see if the ROM chip number ends in either B or C. If it is not an A, 
then the GS is a ROM 01. 

To restart a GS that has had text, background, and border set to the same 
color (usually black) hold down the option key while turning on the power.
After waiting about 10 seconds release the option key and press 2. This 
will set the control panel to the default settings.
