Most II (and Mac +) style mice that I've fixed had a wire go bad, often
right at the "neck" where the wire goes into the strain relief and then
into the mouse itself. Try doing a continuity test of all the wires. There
are 7 of them:
+V
Ground
Button
two for horizontal
two for vertical
if either of the two (for any axis) goes bad, the axis stops working.
Cheap PC style mice often have a "bent" emitter or detecter, causing the
axis to be very flakey. Just bend it back into place to fix. Probably won't
find this problem on a quality product from some "fruit company" making
computers.... ;)
