File type...

Sorry if this question seems a bit boneheaded, buuut...
 
I was recently told that if a MID file downloaded off the net was to be
recognized by Music Composer, its file type had to be changed to $D7 and
aux type to $0000... my question is... um... how do you change a file type
and an aux type exactly, anyway?
 
Another question - I remember seeing that Seven Hills has a browser type
program for the //gs... has anybody tried this?  How well does it work?
As my //gs is currently my ONLY home computer, this is very intriguing to
me (Lynx is okay I suppose, but...)
