Re: Printer compatibility

and AW5.x

NAUG did a fine job for its members in its day. Just to clarify for AppleWorks
4 and 5 users, you don't need any special drivers or disks to set up a DekJet
printer. It's built in to AppleWorks 4 and 5. Go to Standard Settings, Printer
Settings, Select "Add a printer" and then select "DeskJet 500 Portrait" or
"DeskJet 500 Landscape" from the list of printers.

You can also use the (optional) TimeOut accessory "Install DeskJet" if you
choose. It does the same thing as the "Add a printer" menu, and also inserts
some special codes.

The DeskJet 500 drivers built into AppleWorks 4 and 5 are the exact same
drivers as John Link's drivers from SuperPatch 8.0. Because they make use of
built-in features that are inaccessible to a custom printer setup, they far
exceed any custom printer.

The DeskJet drivers built into AppleWorks 4 and 5 are ready to use. I set one
up on my Apple //c the other day, and it took about 30 seconds. I was printing
in AppleWorks, from my //c to my HP DeskJet, immediately after selecting
"DeskJet 500 portrait" from the Add a Printer menu.

That's AppleWorks 4 and 5. Now, about AppleWorks 3.0:

DeskJet drivers for AppleWorks 3.0 which are virtually identical to the ones
that are built-in to AppleWorks 5 are available from TEXAS II. This is not
somebody's custom printer. It is the full DeskJet 500 portrait and landscape
driver, including codes for P-1 (Proportaional-1), a setting which is
impossible to do in a custom printer setup except under special codes. This
way, you don't waste a special code on proportional printing; it's already
built into the P1 command, where it belongs. I probably shouldn't say this
driver is "identical to" the DeskJet driver for AppleWorks 5.1 --- because it
_is_ the DeskJet driver for AppleWorks 5.1. You can add this feature to
AppleWorks 3.0 easily and at no cost. Please contact me if you'd like more
information, or any other help with AppleWorks and DeskJets.
