Your drive and computer sound like they work fine.
It sounds like your DOS disks are bad.
The Basics disk is doing exactly what it should.
Whatever you do, DO NOT pitch the Apple ][+.
Some Apple //e and //gs users will say to get rid of it, but they are getting
harder and harder to find be4cause foolish people are throwing them out.
If you need help getting parts or software for it, I am willing to help.
