Okay; some further checking indicates that the Wizardry V dsk's on
the major archives contain a few glitches. Some may have been present in
earlier versions of the game and others may have been introduced during
dsk conversion or uploading. Anyway, now that the archives know about
the problem it is likely to be fixed. (Thanks for posting about the
problems you've been having.)

For a more recent upload of Wizardry V, try this site ...

ftp://apple.cabi.net/pub/applegs/Games/8bit/Wizardry5_Dsks/ .

I've tried the dsk's there and everything seems to work the way it
should-- including being able to use all of the cursor keys for movement
in the maze. (Also, I uploaded a mini-manual for the game. It includes a
listing of spells.)

By the way, it turns out that the max obtainable total attribute
points during character creation is at least 74. (Such a high total is
very rare, which probably means the max is 75.) So, it is possible to
begin with one or two 'elite class'-- Bishop, Lord, Samurai-- characters
in your party without a horrendous amount of bother.

In case you already have some good characters on the old dsk's you
want to use, here is a way to transfer them to the new dsk's which
worked for me:

* Put new DskA in Drive 1 and new DskB in Drive 2 and boot the game. (It
seems that you need to have both disks in the drives when you start in
order for the game to use both drives-- this saves some swapping during
play.)

* Go to Gilgamesh's. Now, swap your old DskA into Drive 1 and A)dd your
characters to form your party.

* Swap the new DskA back into Drive 1 and go to Edge of Town and enter
Training. Check to see that your characters appear in the Roster. If all
seems well, go back to Gilgamesh's and A)dd your characters to reform
your party and continue the game. Your characters have been transferred.

Note: The above moves your characters to the new dsk's which includes a
fresh maze. If you have gotten very far into the game, you may want to
stick with the old disks since a lot of bad-news monsters will be
restored and some quests may need to be re-quested.
