Wizardry V trouble

I've downloaded the Wizardry V disk images from 2 different sites and still
have the
same problem!  Whenever I create a character I cannot equip them with the
items
that they have in their inventory!  Why is this?  All the other keys work,
read, trade, pool gold, but when I press 'E' for equip, nothing happens.
Also, when in camp, the party equip button cycles through the entire party,
but no inventory of the character shows on the screen.

HELP!
