Not much.

It gives software a way to determine whether you would prefer 40- or
80-columns on your text screen.  Most programs don't bother to check the
switch.  Apple Writer ][e is the one program I have used which *does*
check the switch.  Very nice when I am word-processing with a 5" black and
white TV instead of a 12" monitor.  But then, I've been using my palmtop
long enough that it really isn't that big of an issue...  8-)
