I don't have one of these, so I won't be able to narrow it down more
than "1986 or newer". (I think the platinum IIe was released in 1987,
but the motherboards were first made during '86.)

You may be able to get a closer fix on the age by seeing if you can spot
any date codes on the chips. They are usually written as a four digit
number, of which the first two digits are the week (01-53) and the last
two are the year. This would give a minimum date at which the machine
could have been made.

If you have 55K available in AppleWorks 2.x, then you have a 64K
auxiliary memory card (extended 80-column card) installed in the
auxiliary slot, for a total of 128K RAM. This is standard on the
platinum IIe. The card used is a very small one with about four chips
on it, including two 64Kx4 RAMs.

(This is the equivalent of the IIc as far as memory is concerned.)

You can replace this card with the aforementioned RamWorks (or
equivalent), or you can add a standard slot RAM card like the RamFactor
or Apple II Memory Expansion Card. AppleWorks 2.x will automatically
recognise the standard slot cards, but must be patched for a RamWorks.

AppleWorks 3.0 and later automatically recognise the RamWorks.
