I've never heard of there being an empty socket (other than the game
port, which is in the upper right corner). What motherboard type was
this IIe?
There is no such socket in the 1984 international IIe I have here, nor
in the picture of the original IIe motherboard (US version) in the IIe
technical reference.
The only possibility I can think of is that a chip has been removed for
some reason. Can you find out what is written on the motherboard next
to this socket, and/or the precise board location (there are letters
down the side and numbers along the front of the board to indicate grid
coordinates, e.g. the 65C02 CPU is at location B4 on the original IIe
motherboard).

Just one alternate language. The language you get is determined by the
video and keyboard ROMs. (It affects some of the more obscure
characters on the text screen as well as the keyboard layout.)
Can anyone tell me if the US version of the platinum IIe has this
switch? I've only seen international ones.
For the original IIe, the US version has a smaller video ROM (4KB
instead of 8KB) and no switch.
(My IIe technical reference predates the platinum version, but I know
where I may be able to get my hands on the later release. Shock!
Horror! An Apple II manual that I _don't_ have!)
(I think I just used up my annual quota of exclamation marks.)
