You'd be surprised. You can't eyeball that 1Mhz the same
way as if it were from an Intel chip. The processor in the
IIe was, in many respects, RISC like. In most cases, that
1Mhz IIe was faster than the original IBM PC even though
the PC operated at 4.77Mhz.
Neat applications include GEOS, a graphical GUI operating
system with Postscript support and PublishIt! 4, a desktop
publishing program.
Connect the IIe to a laser printer using these programs
and you get output that you can't tell is different from
a Macintosh or a Windows PC. An 8Mhz ZipChip does
help speed things along, though. ;-)
