As long as you set the ASCII character set as the DeskJet's default character
set, any Apple II program, such as ProSel, AppleWriter, and others will print
to a DeskJet. Early DJ's which had dip switches let you set the ASCII character
set as default on the hardware. This is what I do on my DJ 500, and I have
never had any Apple II program fail to print from either my IIc or my IIGS. I
do not use any drivers at all except when I am using AppleWorks, which has its
own DeskJet driver.
Current DeskJet models only let you set the character set with software, but a
BASIC program, printer init string, or macro could be set up to send the code
for the ASCII character set. Once the code in in the printer, it will stay
active until you change it or turn it off. Keep in mind that the printing will
only be a monospaced Courier, which sort of defeats the purpose of having a
DeskJet (other than having great ink). To get the codes for the ASCII character
set, ask HP, or ask us and we'll experiment.
