Just so that there is no further confusion about CheckWorks and/or the
status of the program, here is an offical statement from Dan Crutcher, the
author of the CheckWorks package and the copyright holder:
Joe Kohn

======================
Joe:
Sorry to hear about your tribulations on comp.sys.a2. Haven't been there
for more than a year, but I well remember how molehills regularly grew into
mountains over there.
For the record, here's my "official" statement on CheckWorks:
Although I did release the first two versions of CheckWorks (v1.1 and 1.2)
as shareware, (for a brief time I called it "fairware"), the program has
been straight-out "commercial" since v1.4 was released in 1993. Since that
time it has been sold exclusively by 1) me; 2) Quality/Scantron Computers;
and for the last couple of years by 3) Shareware Solutions. No one else has
been or is authorized to make it available or sell it in any form.
If someone has one of the older shareware/fairware versions, they are, of
course, free to continue to use it, but updates must be obtained through
Shareware Solutions. I would prefer that all versions of CheckWorks be
removed from any online file catalogs or ftp sites that might still have
them, because 1) I don't want earlier, less robust "drafts" of the program
to be perpetuated and; 2) I don't want people to download them and then
find that they don't work with current versions. CheckWorks 1.1 and 1.2
required AppleWorks 3.x and versions of UltraMacro prior to 4.x; I doubt
that many people still use those particular combinations anyway. Versions
that work with later combinations were never shareware to begin with.
In simplest terms: I do not authorize the use or dissemination of any
versions of CheckWorks. I retain the copyright to the program and I have
granted Joe Kohn's Shareware Solutions exclusive license to sell and
distribute the program.
Hope that clears things up.
All the best
Dan Crutcher
