My thoughts exactly... it might not be auto-sensing, but if you can
control direction via software - that would be very cool.  I don't
remember anything like that in the SCC manual.  I'll have to dig that
back out and take another look...

IIRC, the SSC uses discrete RS-232 level shifter/driver ICs, which
have a fixed direction of data transmission.  Therefore, hardware
rerouting of signals is required to change the direction of a line
or lines.
