I see a problem right there.  The GS used daisy-chainable 3.5" drives,
and the Mac 800k drive without the chaining *does not work*.

Sure will.  I've done that once or twice in a pinch, and the guy who
brings a Stealth GS to the usergroup meetings brings along a monogreen.
