Re: Concerning this CheckWorks Issue: (Was - Re: Where is Aw5???)

One of Joe Kohn's final post to CSA2 before unsubscribing follows in full
content:

"In the last year or two, I have been instrumental in getting two people's
accounts with ISPs terminated. Both Charles Turley and Steve Mentzer lost
accounts for making software available on ftp sites; the software was
copyrighted by Shareware Solutions II.

And, now both of them have the gall to attack my integrity.

For your information, all versions of CheckWorks are copyrighted. Had anyone
bothered to ask the copyright holder of CheckWorks for permission to upload
that file to asimov, they would have been told that CheckWorks is a commercial
software program.

Now, get off my back, both of you.

Your tactics of attacking the victim's ethics and integrity are laughable as
well as they are absurd and pathetic.

If anything is to be learned by this entire incident, it is that I haven't been
vigilant enough to protect my property from unethical people like you. And,
that I'm obviously wasting my time reading csa2."

My reply? Joe Kohn's own web site disputes a portion of what he related above,
concerning the distribution status of the versions of CheckWorks.

Here's the portion from his website page noted below.
You'll note that CheckWorks 3 (the version I claim
was on Asimov as a tar archive) is listed as shareware.
-------------------------------------------------

With CheckWorks 5, users of AppleWorks v5 will be able to write and
print checks, maintain a checkbook register, show current balances,
and reconcile checking accounts without ever having to leave the
friendly, familiar and integrated environment of AppleWorks Classic.

Noted AppleWorks expert Dan Crutcher originally released CheckWorks 3
as a shareware program for use with AppleWorks v3 (enhanced with
UltraMacros 4). After AppleWorks v4 was released by Quality Computers,
CheckWorks 4 was enhanced, updated and released by Quality as a
commercial add-on program for use with AppleWorks v4.

At the current time, the complete CheckWorks package, available
exclusively from Shareware Solutions II, includes the previously
released CheckWorks 3 and CheckWorks 4, as well as CheckWorks 5. No
matter which version of AppleWorks you use, CheckWorks can help you
organize and keep track of your checking accounts.

The complete CheckWorks package is available from Shareware Solutions
II for only $20, plus $3 additional for postage to anywhere in the
world.

Steve, I'll let you take the first shot with your reply at the comments Joe
Kohn posted - as noted above in quote, then I'll follow up on yours, with any
facts and data you failed to include. We both need to set the facts straight
on this one. Patrick, please email me (by external attachments) those two
'CheckWorks' tar file archives under question. I've already deleted them from
my hard drive. I'd like to present their version, documentation and
distribution status to the public for comment via this newsgroup.

Looking forward to both of your reply to my request. And while I'm at it I'll
try to contact the programs author also for a straight answer on all matters
presented above.

Cheers,
Tom
