GS Appletalk to Mac 8.1

I'm trying to network my trusty (and dusty) GS (Rom 3) to my G3/233 with

system 8.1 or my Performa 638 with System 7.5x.

I've set up appletalk on Macs before and I know you have to set sharing
up on
the volumes them selves. I've done that and can network the two Macs.

But when I try to get on the Mac server with the GS the hard drive
volume is
dimmed in the dialog box.

I've tried System 6.0 and 6.0.1 with no changes.  Any ideas?
