At least 4MB of memory and a hard drive.

http://www.allelec.com/ Alltech Electronics sells a Focus drive
(hard drive plus controller) for $59.  It will get you the system
software plus some freeware/shareware.  They also sell a RAM
card called the Sirius which takes 1MB SIMMs for up to 8MB
of memory.

Then all you need is a Macintosh modem cable and a Hayes
compatible modem.  Find any old 14.4 unit should be fine.
Faster ones work, but 14.4 should be sufficient.
