Appleworks 4.0 and above recognize the RAMWorks III card without having
to be patched by an expander.  Many (if not all) of the other nice patches
that the AW Expander provided are part of AW4.0 and higher.
I only have 1mb populated, so I can't speak to how AW 4.0 and up behaves
with any of the RAMWorks III piggyback daughter cards.  If anyone has a
2mb expansion, I'd love to find out! :)
