It will with most modems.  Some might be fussy, and in some cases you
need to tell it you are using a direct connection instead of a dial-up
one.

The fundamental rules:

- One modem will answer using ATA, the other will dial using ATD
(without a telephone number).  You can't get the answering modem to pick
up automatically, because there is no ringing signal.  You need a person
at each end to establish the connection.

- The dialling modem must not be looking for dial tone.  Use ATX1, for
example.
