Stuck on Ys II

Ok, this isn't IIgs related (I'm playing the Japanese NES version)
but since there was a prompt helpful reply to a question on YS I,
I thought it couldn't hurt to ask.

I'm stuck in Ys II, in the ice caverns. I get to a room where
there is a row of pillars that I can't destroy or get around. I
have the fire magic and I think everything else it is possible
to get at this point. What am I doing wrong?
