Agreed. That's about the most we could hope for, although without moderation
there's no automatic enforcement of such rules. A similar case is the
posting of binaries... there's no theoretical prohibition against it, but
rather the opinion of the majority of readers in a particular group whether
or not it's socially acceptable.
My personal method of dealing with this newsgroup is to simply killfile
anyone who gets too obnoxious. I held of killfiling Nathan for ages because
his posts were so pathetic they were amusing. But lately he's lost his edge,
and been getting boring... so I killfiled him.
That's probably the best solution in general for newsgroups: to give the
end readers more tools to filter out what they don't want to read.
