and, at the risk of letting MY colors show, it IS possible to have an
8-bit card that doesn't fit into a 16-bit ISA slot.

i've seen them myself, where the card PHYSICALLY "drops down" right
after the point where the slot ends.  presumably, this would give a
little more space for the engineer(s) of the card to work with.  in
FACT, i think i still have one kicking around....  <raising left
eyebrow>

as 16-bit motherboards became more common, this practice became less
and less popular.  that might explain why your 8-bit card fits nicely
in a 16-bit slot....

(see, Nathan?  it's possible to refute another person WITHOUT
resorting to childish flames... <g>)
