I believe the Macs changed because first Jobs was out, and his entire
idea of an appliance "Macs don't need fans" machine with him.

Second, the PC market had been historically an open architecture creature,
and the new "expandable and accessible" Macs needed to be so to compete
effectively with the PCs in  similar terms, besides being an old homebrew
tradition.
