AppleTalk is a known problem causer and ranks among my favorite
Deletes. Fortunately, our GS does not need to do any file or other I/O
sharing with another Apple II, Mac, or PC. This lets me Delete the
AppleTalk drivers, inits, ... and anything which looks like it might
start, or think about starting AppleTalk.
Another good Delete if you do not need it is the CloseView Init. It
can cause lots of problems-- but, not on our GS because it's gone!
System 6 lets applications add icons to a Desktop file in an ICONS/
folder. Usually, the Desktop file is in /ICONS on the volume on which
the application resides and usually it just happens the first time the
application is run from the Finder. (ICONS/ and Desktop will be created
if necessary.) It's a nice idea; but, sometimes, the resulting Desktop
file is screwed up which can lead to numerous weird problems.
(Conversely, if you have 'inexplicable' file access problems under Sys6,
deleting Desktop may cure them.)
It helps to check the ICONS/ folder on at least the boot volume
from time to time and to Delete Desktop if it's there. You can avoid
having frequently used applications create/change Desktop by launching
them via the QuickLaunch Finder Extra.
