I thought I tried everything in the game.  I found a walkthrough for
ShadowGate, and the Next thing I was supposed to do was to:

SPEAK, (to the rope) "EPOR"

I was trying to speak "ROPE" to it before.  Now the rope attaches itself to the
ceiling, where I can climb it!
