I have a few questions that might clear things up. Are you using an
external hard drive with its own power supply and, if so, are you
turning it off and on at the same time as the IIgs?

I have an AMR 60 MB hard drive and it appears that the SCSI card that
came with it is an early version of the CMS SCSI cards. If I power
down my IIgs and leave the hard drive running (it is an external with
its own power supply), when I turn the IIgs back on, the system will
not see the hard drive and will lock up if I try to access it.

I have to turn off the IIgs, turn off the hard drive, wait a few
seconds, turn on the hard drive and wait for it to spin up (my SCSI
card doesn't have the jumper for setting the boot delay), then turn
the IIgs back on. This way my IIgs will again be able to detect the
hard drive and use it without problems.

There should be very few instances when you actually have to power
down the IIgs. If the system crashes, just reset it by holding down
CTRL and Open-Apple (Command), then press and release the reset key
(which should be a key by itself above the regular keys).

If that doesn't work, you can hold down CTRL, Open-Apple (Command),
Closed-Apple (Option) then press and release reset to start the
self-test. Wait about 10 seconds then do the CTRL-Open-Apple-Reset
(three finger salute) to reset.

I can't remember the last time I actually had to power down and up
again to get my IIgs to restart.
