One omission in this observation: Apple's advertisement of the A2 went
downhill after Macintosh's release, if memory serves. I remember the
dearth of A2 advertisements juxtaposed against impressive A2 sales
(the IIc was truely insanely popular) and poor Macintosh sales. Many
magazines of the time saw the truth -- Apple wanted to change user
preference from the top down.
Now if Apple wanted to just use the A2 to fund Macintosh, they would
have pumped money into advertising the A2 so that it would sell better
and generate more money for more Macintosh development.
A more plausible explanation is that Apple wanted the A2 dead and
to force the success of Macintosh. That's why they killed the 32
bit ARM powered A2 project.
The reason behind Apple's hatred of the A2 was Steve Jobs. He was
trying to kill the A2 too quickly that Apple had to get rid of him, pump
SOME life back into the A2....at least so it could last long enough for
Macintosh to improve. If Jobs had stayed, Apple would have died 12
years ago.
Steve Wozniak observed that Apple could have been twice as big had
they improved on the A2....went the 32 bit ARM powered A2 road...
as someone else here pointed out.
