That's incorrect, the original Apple IIe (non-enhanced firmware)
does have a hardware test built-in. I'm quite sure this also applies
to the non-enhanced firmware _in_ a revision 'A' motherboard as well
(the only changes between the 'A' and 'B' revisions was the ability
to display Double-Hi-Res graphics and, if I'm not mistaken, a special
video signal was added to slot-7. In otherwords, nothing that would
prevent the diagnostic from running).
