There is no need!  You can just take your phone off the hook until the
dialtone goes dead.  Then ATA on one modem and ATD on the other,
both hooked into the phone wiring of the building.  The telephone
company provides the electricity....

No, hook them to the building's phone jacks.  That's the way to get the
electrical signal from the telephone exchange without a leased line.
You pay phone bills, so why not use the service?

Forget that mode -- use the phone line (after taking the phone off the
hook until the dialtone is dead).
