But this won't work with all phone companies...when I leave my phone
off the hook (US West), I get a rapid tone interspersed by a voice
saying "Please hangup the phone and try again", or something toothat
effect.
With 33.6 modems, it seems easier to just run a line between the two
and you can then pay attention to where the line goes and probably
get a very clear line. This originally was the only way I could get
a 28.8 (pre 33.6) connection with my modem. Even having two lines
in the house wouldn't allow a 28.8 connection because of the
limitations of where I lived and where the US West switch was.
