A quick lesson on Apple IIe keyboard combos:

If your friend has a newer IIe, you can press Control-Option+Reset to run a
system self test.
(Lots of flashing lights followed by a "System OK" message)
If you have a disk drive plugged into the Apple, and no disk, press
Control+Reset to get to the BASIC prompt.

If you don't have a newer IIe (one with out the option key), hold down the
"Filled (or Black) Apple" key in the option key's place.
