Todd, didn't Derek Taubert use an ISA 8-bit ethernet card in a IIgs?
I seem to remember that he had something like what you describe set
up. However, it was unable to operate with a IIgs accelerator installed.
Granted, this is all from memory but I believe it to be fairly accurate.
