Wolf3D trouble...it's me...

I downloaded Wolf3d last night (Thanks, Sheppy!). I also downloaded GUPP from
Nathan's FTP site (thanks, Nathan!). Additional thanks to Nathan for
making that available via FTP since even though I've followed all the
hints I could find for configuring Lynx2.7 it still insists on downloading
BXY files as ASCII...

Anyway, that aside...I'm having problems. It must be me, since everyone
else is enjoying Wolf so much. Here's what I did.

a) Downloaded, then unshrunk into my games directory, which happens to be
    on an HFS partition.
b) Installed GUPP.
Note that I don't have Heirarchic, and therefore based on what I have
read, The Bug probably wouldn't bite me anyway. Not a big deal, since
The Bug only bites on quit...and besides, I downloaded the patcher to
    fix it.
c) Rebooted and tried to run Wolf3D.

I got the "updating desktop file" dialog and thermometer. Then the screen
shifted to 320 mode. Then the screen went black. Then...well...nothing
happened. I also could not RESET...I had to do a power-cycle to reboot.

Thinking that perhaps Wolf3D didn't like HFS (though, from the sound of
it, that shouldn't have caused any trouble), I copied the directory to a
ProDOS partition, though still not the boot partition (/* is a bit
crowded!). I tried running the game again. Same problem, except this
time I was able to hit RESET to reboot the machine. This time I held
SHIFT as the machine booted.

I tried one more time. This time I got music and opening graphics. The
music ended and I got the mission selection. Everything went wonderfully
at this point. I even went to look at the credits. Then I went to the
'play level selection' screen. This screen was somewhat trashed, with
blue horizontal lines across it, but it was still viewable.

I clicked on "Can I play, Daddy?" and immediately the screen went to
trash. Now, if this is supposed to be a 3200 graphic, I can understand
it, as I have a VOC installed. But I waited for a long while and nothing
changed. Finally I rebooted and went to bed, deciding that it was far too
late to fool with it.

So, does anyone have any suggestions? Is Wolf3D using 3200 screens,
meaning that I need to bypass the VOC? Do I need to re-extract the
archive to ProDOS? Any other suggestions? Shift-booting is not a problem
if that is what I have to do. I haven't tried hunting for INIT/DA
conflicts just yet.

My system:
  ROM 01 GS, GS/OS 6.0.1. stock CPU
5.25Mb RAM, just over 4Mb free (according to "About...") with GS/OS loaded
Moderate collection of INITS and DAs
  No AppleTalk

Thanks for any assistance!
