Sound like you don't have a properly wired hardware handshaking cable
and your IIgs is being overrun with data because it can't tell your
shell account to stop sending data.

I believe both the ProTerm and Spectrum manuals tell you how a
hardware handshaking cable should be wired to work properly with those
programs.
