              KANSASFEST COSTS


The price of K-Fest may be slightly less than in the past, but still sky
high compared to academic conventions.

I note that the cost is $215 if the attender gets NO MEALS OR ROOM; why??

By comparison, here are comparable registration fees for conferences I
attend ---- hotel and meals are extra.  These academic meetings run 3-4
days, similar to K-Fest (Okay, KFest is five days ...)


1997 RATES OF ACADEMIC MEETINGS HELD IN LARGE HOTELS:
----------------------------------------------------
Third World Studies Assn, Hartford CT:   $65 including banquet and
reception

African Studies Assn, Columbus OH:   $85 with free reception
   Will cost $90 in 11-98 in downtown Chicago IL.

Western Psychological Assn, Albuquerque NM, 4-98: $70 for faculty or 
	$35 for students

National Conference on Minority Male Violence, Hyatt Regency New Orleans
	$200 for non-presenters, or $100 for presenters (seven meals
	included at luxury hotel at these rates)


These associations do NOT subsidize their conference registration rates;
the costs of the meetings are paid by the fees.

So, _why_ is K-FEST $215 if the attender stays off-campus?
I'd expect that total revenues from fees would rise with a lower
registration cost ---- maybe three times the attendance with a $100 fee.
