I invite you to read the comp.sys.apple2 Frequently Asked Questions
(FAQ) at http://www.visi.com/~nathan/a2/faq/csa2.html It covers all of
the major download places to get software from (not merely dinky
personal software collections), how to download, where to get things,
and much more. The software mentioned below can be picked up from
vendors in section 10.2 of the FAQ.

I'd reword that to be "what *hardware* is a must have." Now that
you have a hard drive, make sure you have 2+MB ram in it, and if you
can find one (not being produced any more, so good luck finding one),
an accelerator such as the ZipGS or Transwarp GS. With that, you can
run just about anything you want. For software, once you have the HD
and RAM, get GS System 6.0.1 and the patches for it are pretty much
what you should be getting.

Some people like ProSEL-16 for launching apps; others would just
perfer the Finder. [I like GNO/ME and a nice set of aliases to run
stuff] It's a matter of personal preference. Seven Hills Software
sells a bunch of addons that some really like-- from Kangaroo to
Transprog. Basically, figure out what you want to do, and ask. People
can answer if there's something like that, or if you're very lucky,
could write something.
