Even with the cover off (or the magnet missing), the printhead will still
do its reset/center-seek/black reset upon power-up.  (I just tried it).

Mostly right, but not strictly accurate.  Color/black sensing is done with
a switch under the ribbon carrier; but regardless of what ribbon is in
place (in case you switched them), the printhead is cycled down to yellow
then back up to black.  This insures that if you have a color ribbon
installed, the printhead will be in position to print on black...and if
you have a black ribbon, the head will be in position to print on it.

I suggest that you also check for an obstruction; make sure the printhead
assembly can move back and forth.  Make sure that the limit switch on the
bottom of the printhead assembly is not stuck...make sure the magnet is in
place...
