The original purpose for the 'D0' and 'D8' sockets was optional software:
the original implementation of Hi-Res software and some simple sound routines
(as well as other misc. useful code) was sold as the "Programmer's Aid #1"
ROM. This was before the Disk ][ remember, so you had to load everything
from ROM or from (ugh) cassette tape.

There was also a hacker utility ROM containing the legendary Inspector and
Watson programs, which used 'D8' I think.

When AppleSloth came out they had to use all 5 of the non-F8 sockets because
AppleSoft had oodles of useful features, but it was translated over from
MicroSquash GBASIC for the Z-80 and wasn't very fast.
