Most of the escape-mode functions work equally well in 40-column or
80-column mode. The notable exceptions are the 80-column firmware control
sequences such as esc-4, esc-8, and esc-^Q. They are somewhat more
convenient in 80-column (or active-40) mode, as the 80-column firmware
changes the cursor to an inverse-+ when you are in the 'esc' mode.

Also, I believe the esc-esc sequence given earlier is incorrect. On my
machines, esc-esc merely toggles between escape mode and normal mode.

In fact, the most basic escape key sequences
          esc-D
  esc-A esc-B
esc-C (I think I got those directions right)
will work on ANY Apple ][.

The second most basic sequences:
          esc-I
  esc-J esc-K
          esc-M
will work on any Apple ][ with Autostart ROM or better, including
everything except the original Apple ][. That one being the one with
Integer BASIC in ROM.

When the Apple ][e was introduced, two more arrow keys were added to the
keyboard, and that added four more escape sequences, ones which I very
seldom use:
          esc-^K
  esc-^H esc-^U
          esc-^J

(recall the mappings for the various keys--
     TAB = ^I
Up Arrow = ^K
Dn Arrow = ^J
Lt Arrow = ^H
Rt Arrow = ^U
Open Apple is PB0
Solid Apple is PB1)

Another little pitfall with the 80-column display firmware. Notice that
the --> key comes across as ^U? It just so happens that if you print a
^U, it will shut off the 80-column firmware. For some reason, I have had
the GET instruction return a CHR$(32) [space] instead of a CHR$(21) [^U]
when the 80-column firmware was active. I'm not sure where it was getting
translated...

More, I am sure, than you ever wanted to know...
