The heat is undoubtedly not helping anything, but electrolytic caps go bad
all by themselves. Possibly the voltage rating of the original doesn't have
a great deal of "head room".

High wattage resistors commonly run quite warm. If you want to move it away
from the cap, the best way is to replace it and leave the leads long so
that the resistor sits well above the board. This will also aid cooling of
the resistor, which will also prolong its life.
