Rubywand posted a lot of good stuff. Be aware that electrolytic capacitors
can be "leaky" and be very difficult to detect. They can start going bad as
soon as 5 or 6 years after manufacture, and they ALL go bad eventually.
Switching power supplies depend on those caps for critical elements of
their function and may not work if the caps aren't 100% good.

I vary slightly on Rubywand's comments on the choice of replacements: you
are generally safe to go up or down in capacitance by 10%-15%. For example,
it's usually OK to replace a 250mf cap with a 220mf cap, or, say, replace a
300mf cap with a 330mf one. Always match or go up on voltage rating, but
make a real effort to match it fairly closely.
