    Although not nearly as common, a VAX/VMS shell account will work
just as well (I frequently check my mail or browse comp.sys.apple2
using my Apple IIe or IIc Plus through a VAX shell, when my Apple IIgs
has been switched off for night and I just want to log for a minute).

    There are no JPEG viewers for the 8-bit Apple II, and with good
reason considering the speed, color and resolution limitations. You
could, however, compile and run a JPEG->GIF converter on a Unix shell
account, resulting in a GIF file you could download and view on your
IIe. It would only be usable for simple line-art or illustrations 
though, photo quality images need at least greyscales to be seen.
