What I would and wouldn't do.....
Because there seems to be all this misinformation floating around out there
that I copy software "at will," my own guidelines on this follows:
I buy software. That's right, buy. Whether it's for my Macs, Apple II's,
or whatever else. In the 1980s I bought literally thousands of dollars
worth of software--both games and productivity--for my first home computer,
an Apple IIc. I still have all those software packages and manuals to this
day. When I got my Apple IIgs and IIe used after 1990, I again bought at a
store in my area that caters to out-of-date or no longer produced systems.
The internet didn't exist for me until 1994, so there was no possible way
to "download" or get otherwise "free" software during that time. I have
never even belonged to a computer user group of any kind.
Before I will copy a disk for someone, I make sure of the following: That
it is a software company that is TOTALLY out of existence; not a publisher
who has been absorbed by another company, publishing under a different name
now, etc. etc. I also make sure that there is no good address or telephone
number for them any longer and I do attempt to contact them if at all
possible. I have no qualms of copying a disk for someone once the above
conditions have been met.
I'm sorry to have had to bore the rest of the group with this otherwise
uncessary message. I certainly hope it satisfies the "need to know" users
like Sheldon Simms, et al.
