I used one of these for quite a while--the "instant boot" was very handy,
 especially at trade shows.  I don't recall the answer to the first, but I may
 have a copy of the manual somewhere--I'll look.

Re the second:  The card uses a +5V regulator, so all you need to do is feed in
 a fairly stable voltage that's enough above the desired 5V to let the
 regulator work properly.  About 7-8 volts should do well.  I used an external
 8V battery (4 Gates 5 Ah cells) that I kept charged separately, then fed the
 resulting, _very_ smooth 8V into the Checkmate card--worked very nicely.
