dana@studiowerks.com wrote asking for software so
old son could play with a Laser 128.
Dana, this is a real good computer for kids of all ages because
neither you nor they have to live in fear of breaking it :) Of
course this is not meant to denigrate the machine; it's just that
another used Apple II compatible, especially an 8-bit like the Laser,
wouldn't cost much.
As other posters have probably said by now, there is lots of good
preschool software available for this platform, most of it cheap when
you can find it used, but with some still marketed, mostly to
schools, at premium prices.
Around four years ago, I posted a small freeware program ("Babytalk")
to the download library of the GEnie on-line service. Reponse from
the public was underwhelming. In other words, if you use it, your
child and mine may be the only ones who have ever done so. I do
believe that if you have a joystick, your one year old will like it.
Without a joystick, it will talk and tweet a little but be less of a
hit. If interested, email me your snail mail address and I'll send
you a disk. The 128 uses 5 1/4 inch floppies, right?

P.S. If anyone looks in GEnie's library, you may find that the
Babytalk version there requires an Apple IIGS. However, I also have
an 8 bit version which would be the one sent to Dana.
P.P.S. Although I would have thought myself far too minor a net
player to merit such attention, it seems that someone recently
hijacked my address and sent a rude email which appeared to be from
me but of course was not. If anyone gets an impolite email message,
it certainly did not come from me. I have no reason to believe that
this address-snatching (I forget the technical term) is Apple II
related, but I wanted to note it somewhere in Usenet so if anyone
ever did a reference.com or Dejanews search on my address they would
find out the real story.
