   If you're not a hardware hacker type, the solution's simple-- ditch
current 3.5" drive, acquire substitute.

   The [S]WIM chip is on the motherboard and controls the
drives. Since you've already proven that a replacement drive works
fine, the problem is somewhere on the drive end.
