  [Tip: press return every 70 characters or so, not 79+; make s it
easier to quote. Also, avoid using tabs, as whatever Microsloth's news
reader may display them as is almost certainly guaranteed to be wrong]

   If there are no cards in this system, then this GS has only 256K of
memory in it, and you'll be unable to use pretty much all of the
GS-specific fun desktops, and the like. [Apple forgot to manufacture a
system where people could *use* the neat graphics they bought it for;
they later sold a usable system out of the box.]

   You'll probably going to have to add more RAM to the system before
it'll really be useful. The comp.sys.apple2 Frequently Asked Questions
(FAQ) at http://www.visi.com/~nathan/a2/faq/csa2.html has pointers to
several manufacturers of GS ram cards.

   First off, don't even think about touching System 6.x (or 5.x or
4.x) without at least 1MB ram (preferably 2). [It's possible to get by
on 768K in some cases, but that's really crippling yourself] I don't
know of any GS/OS (forget it for ProDOS 8) serial-line drivers that'll
go to any other computer, but it wouldn't be that hard overall to
write.
