Been there...done that... I acquired an Apple ][c from a thrift store
a couple of weeks ago. The keycaps *do* indeed lift off. It is easier if
you can get a finger and thumb on either side of the keycap and wiggle
it,
all the while lifting up. Also, a flat screwdriver inserted under the
key
and pushed in to the base of the key can *carefully* pry off the keycap.
Be careful *not* to break the little cross off the top of the keyswitch
underneath.
Unless you have the keyboard memorized well, you should write down a
layout
for it. That way you can get the keycaps *back* where they came from. (I
actually laid the keycaps out on a table in the same configuration that
they
occupied on the keyboard.)
